Ty is the son of Harold, a jeweler and his wife Georgia, a pianist, and grew up in La Grange, a suburb of Chicago, in a house designed by famous architect Frank Lloyd. He attended Lyons Township High School, located in Western Springs, Illinois, and then attended St. John`s Military Academy in Delafield, Wisconsin, after which Ty enrolled at Kalamazoo College in Michigan, however, he dropped out of studies after only a year.
He then moved to Los Angeles in order to pursue a career as an actor, but after a few minor roles, he returned to Chicago and started working for Dakin, a plush toy maker, in the sales department. However, he was fired, as reportedly he started selling his own toys in the company`s stores, and he then moved to Italy, where he lived for a couple of years before returning once again to Chicago and starting his own company.
He took out a mortgage on his house, and added his own life savings to start Ty Inc.; in the beginning he produced and sold toy cats, but his break-out came in 1993 when his firm launched Beanie Babies. He then started introducing new toys, such as Monstaz, Pluffies, Li`l Ones and others, before in 2007 launching Ty Girlz, a similar toy to the MGA Entertainment`s Bratz Dolls, the sales of all these only increasing his net worth.
Apart from making toys, Ty has invested in hotels and golf courses, and now owns several prestigious resorts, including the Four Seasons Hotel in New York City, San Ysidro Ranch in Montecito, California, and the Kona Village resort in Hawaii, among others, which successful management has also added a substantial amount to his net worth.
Regarding his personal life, Ty has never married, and tends to keep his private life away from public eyes. He has had a few problems with the law, primarily for tax evasion, for which he was sentenced to two years of probation, and community service.

Some of his donations include $6 million to Andre Agassi Foundation for underprivileged children, and through his Ty Inc. charity has raised millions for a number of charity organizations, including Elizabeth Pediatric Aids Foundation, Princess Diana Memorial Fund and the American Red Cross.
