Barry James Melrose was born on the 15th July 1956, in Kelvington, Saskatchewan, Canada, and is a former professional hockey player, who played for such teams as the Springfield Indians of the AHL, Cincinnati Stingers of the WHA, Winnipeg Jets of the NHL, Toronto Maple Leafs and Detroit Red Wings. His playing career was active from 1974 until 1987, then after retirement Barry started his coaching career, and now serves as a commentator for the ESPN and NHL Networks as well.

Barry is the son of Norrie and her husband James Melrose; other details about his early life and education are unknown in the media.
His first professional hockey team was the Kamloops Chiefs of the WHCL, for whom he played in the defense man position in the 1974-1975 and 1975-1976 seasons. After that, he joined the Springfield Indians, and stayed for half of the 1976-1977 season, before he became a part of the Cincinnati Stingers. He played for them until 1979, which certainly increased his net worth.

After that, he split time between the Toronto Maple Leafs and Detroit Red Wings, before he joined the Adirondack red Wings of the AHL, and retired in 1987.

Soon after his playing time was over, Barry became the head coach of the Medicine Hat Tigers of the WHL, and won the Memorial Cup title with the team. After that he became coach of the Seattle Thunderbirds, and then Adirondack Red Wings. He coached the Red Wings for three seasons, winning the Calder Cup in 1991-1992 season.

Thanks to his success with the Red Wings, Barry was appointed as head coach of the Los Angeles Kings, and in 1993 he led them to the Stanley Cup Finals, unfortunately in the following season his tactics were read, and the team didn`t reach the play-offs, and after another bad year, he was fired. His next coaching job came in 2008, when he became head coach of the Tampa Bay Lightning, but after only 15 games, he was fired.

Apart from coaching, Barry works as a commentator and analyst for both ESPN and NHL Network. He first joined ESPN in 1996 and stayed on with the Network until 2008, but after he was fired from Tampa Bay, he re-joined the ESPN. Also, since 2011 Barry is a contributor to the NFL Network, which has also added to his net worth.

Regarding his personal life, Barry has been married to Cindy since 1978; the couple has two children, and reside in Glens Falls, New York.
Barry comes from a hockey family; his cousins are Wendel Clark and Joe Kocur.
